About the Process
On the surface, The Curable Romantic is a mostly harmless collection of humorous relationship-based essays. But it is also a labor of love and an experiment in how much control an author can have over a book's content, availability, and marketing.
Every aspect of the book was produced by Katharine Miller, the author. The writing, typesetting/layout, illustration, and format conversion were handled solely by the author. Taking advantage of the magical on- line publishing and marketing tools, Miller is officially joining the ranks of the self-published and working diligently to legitimize the process.
The publishing world is evolving. Writers and readers are able to interact more freely than ever before. We can release creative content without interference of the publishers who can reject projects based on their own needs or the perceived needs of a choice target demographic. That does mean more crap can take up valuable shelf space and band- width. But let’s be honest, even with the middle-man, a lot of sub-par content gets the green light.
What's missing is the bookstore experience. For you, the reader are missing the act of physically flipping through the book on a lazy Saturday afternoon. And I am missing the opportunity to drag everyone I know to the bookstore just to point and say, "Look, there's my book! I made that!" However, we've both been granted the ability to do all of these things without needing to put on pants. Hooray!
